Hello guys, sorry that I’ve been MIA a bit. Between my busy schedule at work and prepping for our Hong Kong visit, I had little to no time for writing last week.

We just got back and I feel totally rejuvenated, well-rested and filled with excitement. Trip to Hong Kong turned out to be everything I hoped for and so much more. The city packs so much electrifying energy it’s impossible not to get inspired. I didn’t realize how much I needed to take a break and how much I missed being surrounded by the western culture. Thankfully, Hong Kong gave me just that. While I love my life in Tokyo, the place is distinctly different from the rest of the world, or at least, the part of the world I am used to. Japanese excel at holding on to their identity and traditions and even in the most modern and westernized places you feel a touch of local influence. Japan is a place like no other and as much as I love it I think I was starting to feel a bit homesick for something that resonated more with my roots, meaning the west. I certainly didn’t know what to expect in HK and was so happy to discover a real cosmopolitan city with its own character, local identity and pizzazz.

Despite the typhoon that hit the city for a day, J and I still managed to explore the highlights, shop at local markets, indulge in great food and, most importantly, spend a truly relaxing quality time together. I’ll tell you all about it in due course, but for now I’ll just share a few postcards of Hong Kong’s epic skyline as seen from different angles. I think the word breathtaking is quite fitting, don’t you think? hong-kong-1-2hong-kong-1hong-kong-2hong-kong-1-3In the coming weeks I’ll write the series of stories describing what we were up to and how we spent four days in Hong Kong.   1. Oh man, I can’t wait to see what you have to say. After spending this Thanksgiving in Tokyo, I’m taking my gf to Hong Kong for Christmas/New Year’s and plan on proposing. I will definitely need some fine dining restaurant recommendations!

    As a side note, did you find securing reservations easier in Hong Kong? Even their top places like Ryugin and Lung King Heen seem much easier than Tokyo. I think some even use OpenTable!

I am so excited for you, Hong Kong will definitely make a memorable engagement place :) We absolutely loved our dinners at Amber, Lung King Heen and L’Atelier, as well as lunch at Tin Lung Heen at The Ritz. We were also highly encouraged to try VEA, and it saddens me that we didn’t have time on this trip. Generally I had no difficulty getting reservation (unlike Tokyo, as you rightly noted), but I do recommend booking as soon as possible (I did mine in Aug for a Nov trip) to reserve a table with a view for that extra special night :) You probably know this already, but let the restaurant know in advance about the occasion and they’ll arrange congratulatory drinks and maybe a special dessert. I’ll be writing a series of posts very soon, so stay tuned for the details.
